Augmented reality may be the solution to a shortage in skilled labor
In industries like manufacturing, chemical processing, electrical generation and oil production, equipment failure could lead to expensive downtime – and the longer it takes for technicians to diagnose and repair the problem, the more expensive it becomes. Fortunately, Dell has a solution, outlined in a recent brief entitled Six Steps to Using Augmented Reality to Increase Asset Uptime.
The solution combines the Internet of Things (IoT) with augmented reality (AR) and integrates them into the industrial maintenance and field service process. Data captured by the IoT can be analyzed and used to diagnose problems and prompt predictive maintenance, in some cases allowing service technicians to fix problems remotely. If a service technician must be dispatched, AR can overlay diagnostic information, service instructions, part catalogs and more, allowing less-experienced technicians to administer more expedient service.
The result? Less downtime and more efficient technicians. For more details about Dell’s solution, visit http://delliotpartners.com/FTP/Docs/Augmented_Reality_Enabled_Field_Maintenance_Dell-PTC_Solution_Brief_Final.pdf.
